Located within a driving distance from the pulsating metropolis of Kolkata, the Chintamani Kar Bird Sanctuary is the haven of huge varieties of butterflies, birds, ferns, epiphytes and orchids. The sanctuary is located to the west of the Netaji Subhas Road, which connects Garia with Baruipur in the Rajpur area. It lies in close to the Ramkrishna Mission Institute in Narendrapur.
Formerly known as “Kayaler Bagan,” the site was recognized as a sanctuary in the year 1982 and bestowed with the name of Narendrapur Wildlife Sanctuary on September 8, 2004.
However, since 2005, the sanctuary was finally named as Chintamani Kar Bird Sanctuary after the renowned artist Chintamoni Kar, who has a major contribution in providing “Kayaler Bagan,” the status of a wildlife sanctuary.

What to see at Chintamani Kar Bird Sanctuary: Chintamani Kar Bird sanctuary is the home of a number of bird species, which include Common Hawk Cuckoo, Streak-throated Woodpecker, Emerald Dove, Crested Serpent Eagle, White-throated Fantail and Large-tailed Nightjar and many more.
Some rare species include Tickell’s Thrush, Slaty-legged Crake, Scarlet-backed Flowerpecker, Scaly Thrush, Little Spiderhunter, Grey-headed Fish Eagle and Blue-throated Flycatcher. Moreover, the sanctuary is also a home to a number of small wildlife, like civet cat, jungle cat, jackal, monitor lizard and others.
Since the site of the sanctuary was an abandoned orchard, the place is also dotted with a number of trees of coconut palm, jackfruit, guava, tamarind, ficus and others.

How to reach Chintamani Kar Bird Sanctuary: It is situated in the district of South 24-Parganas of West Bengal. The site lies close from the Rathtala Bus stop. EM Bypass is the ideal route to follow for reaching the destination. The sanctuary is located at a distance of 10 km. from Ruby General Hospital. Auto-rickshaws and buses are also found from Garia. You can also travel on private buses that halt at Rathtala.
Best time to visit Chintamani Kar Bird Sanctuary: The ideal time of visiting the place is the period between Spring and winter.
Lodging and Dining facilities at Chintamani Kar Bird Sanctuary: Its preferable to take your own food. There are no lodging facilities at the Bird Sanctuary. It is best for day trips.

How to Reach:
Get any bus towards Baruipur from EB Bypass and get down at Rath Tala more. OR From Garia take any auto towards Baruipur and get down at Rath Tala more stoppage.

This is place is also good for Butterfly & Insect watching. Those people are like to do macro photography, they will get a heaven for sure.
