Places to see in Shiv Khola
The spiritual core of the village is the Shivkhola Temple, a small yet deeply sacred site nestled on the riverbank. Believed to have been originated by Lord Shiva himself, the temple houses a naturally formed Shivling, which draws large crowds of devotees and visitors during the auspicious festival of Mahashivaratri. This sacred atmosphere is complemented by the nearby Three-River Confluence, where the Mahananda Khola, Shivkhola, and Chiplay Khola hill streams meet in a beautiful display of nature’s interconnectedness.
The physical landscape of Shivkhola offers both tranquility and awe-inspiring vistas. The journey typically winds through the Nurbong Tea Estate (often associated with the Nurbong Tea Factory), where sprawling, emerald-green tea gardens provide breathtaking panoramic views of the rolling hills. Upon reaching the village, the Shivkhola View Point (and its accompanying waterfall area) becomes a primary draw for visitors. Here, water cascades through ancient boulders into a small natural pool, creating a mesmerizing sight perfect for a refreshing dip. For a broader perspective, another viewpoint located near Simring Tea Garden offers an unforgettable 360-degree look at the surrounding mountains and valleys. Together, these sites form a cohesive journey through the spiritual and natural wonders of the Darjeeling district.

From the dense canopy of protected forests to the sun-drenched slopes of orange orchards, the nearby landmarks form a circuit of unparalleled beauty in North Bengal. At the heart of this natural splendor lies the Mahananda Wildlife Sanctuary. As a vital protected forest area, it serves as a sanctuary for a rich variety of Himalayan flora and fauna, including majestic elephants and graceful deer. Within the sanctuary’s embrace is Latpanchar, its highest point. This particular hamlet has gained international acclaim among birdwatchers as one of the few places on earth where one can spot the endangered Rufous-necked Hornbill in its natural habitat, perched high above the forest floor.
The landscape shifts from wild forests to cultivated beauty as one moves toward Sittong. Affectionately known as the “Orange Village,” Sittong is famous for its vast orchards that turn the hillsides a vibrant gold during the winter months. The village is a collection of peaceful hamlets where the slow pace of life and the scent of citrus provide a soulful retreat. Not far from here is the Ahal Dara View Point, a prominent ridge that offers perhaps the most dramatic perspective in the region. From this vantage point, visitors are treated to a 360-degree panorama that includes the winding Teesta River below and the towering, snow-capped peaks of the Kanchenjunga range on the horizon.
Rounding out the local experience is Rongtong, a quintessential stop along the historic Darjeeling Himalayan Railway route. It offers a nostalgic glimpse into the region’s colonial past as the iconic Toy Train whistles through the verdant curves of the mountains. Whether it is the mechanical charm of the railway or the raw majesty of the wildlife corridors, these surrounding attractions transform a visit to Shivkhola into a comprehensive journey through the best of the Eastern Himalayas.
